Airtect detects runaway material leaks in hot runners and machine nozzles to prevent significant downtime and repair costs

Plastixs, a supplier of equipment solutions for injection molding and material handling, announces two certified installation partners for its Airtect leak-detection system.
Mobile Manifold Repair, based in Ohio and Michigan, will travel to production facilities to install Airtect devices, while Quality Mold Shop based in Tennessee will install Airtect devices on new or existing injection molds with hot runner manifolds.
Airtect detects plastic leaks in hot runners and machine nozzles to eliminate downtime. Plastixs-certified installers install these systems on mold manifolds to ensure optimal operation.
Material leaks at the machine nozzle can damage injection molding machines, while leaks inside hot runners can damage expensive molds, explained Plastixs founder Mickey Blyskal. Downtime and repair costs can be considerable:
- Nozzle leak (damage to machine): Downtime can range from one to three days depending on leak severity and the labor available to clean it. The cost of replacement parts ranges from $1,000 to $3,000 based on industry averages. “Leaks at the nozzle can also cause fires that, while not always catastrophic, can cause health risks to personnel,” Blyskal cautioned. “A basic nozzle protection device that costs less than $1,000 can prevent such incidents.”
- Hot runner leak (damages mold): Downtime can last one to four weeks depending on severity of damage. The cost to repair damaged heaters and thermocouples can quickly exceed $20,000. “Most molds can be protected with devices that cost less than $6,000,” Blyskal said.
Mobile Manifold Repair will not only travel to production facilities to install Airtect leak detection devices but will also perform cleanup and repair. For large molds, the company works with a partner in Michigan who can refurbish very large tools.
Meanwhile, Quality Mold Shop installs Airtect systems on new or existing hot runner molds in their well-equipped tool room. They can install and test Airtect systems on a wide variety of mold and hot runner configurations and return them to the customer ready to plug into air and power and start protecting the hot runner mold immediately.
“Airtect has proven to be a highly popular downtime avoidance tool since we introduced it to the product line in the U.S. in 2017,” Blyskal concluded. “We’re excited that many more customers have an easier path to experiencing Airtect’s mold protection capabilities and fast ROI through greatly reduced repair costs and downtime.”
Airtect directly detects plastic leaks with features including:
- Programmable machine interlocks
- A highly sensitive pressure differential switch
- Calibrates the pressure drop across all tubes at start-up
- Sensor tubes easily located within existing wiring channels
- Leak location(s) displayed on LED or LCD clear text display
