PCS Company Donates Equipment to Ferris State Plastics Program

Press release submitted on behalf of PCS.

PCS Company donated an 11-by-18-inch four-cavity ASTM D638 Type 1 Tensile Bar mold base equipped with pressure sensors to help manage injection control atFerris State University’s plastics engineering technology program.

Fostering the next generation of manufacturing professionals, PCS Company has donated a mold base and other components to Ferris State University, home to one of the nation’s few plastics engineering technology programs.

Ferris State, in Big Rapids, Michigan, has received a permanent donation of equipment from PCS that includes a mold base, side locks and miscellaneous components. Student will develop their skills and understand how differing resins, process variables and environment affect product performance.

The 11-by-18-inch mold base is a four-cavity ASTM D638 Type 1 Tensile Bar equipped with pressure sensors to help manage injection control. The mold will be used in the Ferris State plastics lab so students can learn basic plastic injection processing with numerous resins. The sensors measure internal cavity pressure for more advanced process insights. The molded tensile bars can then be physically tested to define stress and strain properties.

In November, representatives from PCS of Fraser, Michigan, and Detail Technologies of Wyoming, Michigan, visited Ferris State to assist the university’s plastics engineering technology program and connect with students preparing to enter the workforce. Ferris State’s plastics program is built around applied learning. Students work directly with injection molding machines, tooling, automation systems and materials in a lab environment designed to mirror real manufacturing floors.

Staying current is a constant focus. Students complete two required internships, gaining exposure to different companies, technologies, and production environments. The program also brings in industry guest speakers and attends global manufacturing conferences. In 2025 students attended the K Show in Germany, one of the most prominent global plastics events. Students at Ferris State are also given the opportunity to learn on the latest and greatest equipment in the industry. In many cases, students train on machines that are less than a year old.
