Globeius has announced a new electronic key-card access system that can help close a potential blind spot in plastics processors’ traceability efforts by providing a way to log who operates material-handling vehicles throughout the plant.
The system, available as a retrofit or as an option on new PLC-controlled plant vehicles such as forklifts, cranes and scissor lifts, provides an additional layer of security for manufacturers of products for sensitive industries, such as health care.
Requirements such as the FDA’s Quality Management System Regulation (QMSR) and ISO 13485, which both cover medical devices, have created increasing pressure on companies to ensure they have total visibility into their manufacturing operations, said Globeius General Manager Graeme Sands. The key-card access system provides another tool for maintaining accountability, no matter what kind of products manufacturers make.
“Medical device manufacturers need to provide traceability for all the products they make. They need to know exactly what was made, how it was made, who made it, what materials were used, and where every affected product was shipped,” Sands said. “But they’re not the only ones—manufacturers in all industries are looking for greater safety and control, with more visibility into every step of their operation.”
Traditionally, physical keys have been used to operate manufacturing-plant vehicles. Those keys can be shared or used by unauthorized drivers, making it difficult for plant managers to know exactly who operated a vehicle and when. Keys also can be lost, compromising security while hampering operations.
Globeius’ electronic access system replaces traditional keys with up to 100 individually assigned credentials, creating a digital record of vehicle use. By tying vehicle access to specific operators, processors can gain greater visibility into material-handling activity and strengthen their overall traceability and accountability programs.
“That’s a great safety feature because without password-protection, anybody can just show up and drive the crane, even without permission,” Sands said.
