Optional Sensor Packages Provide Extra Layer of Protection Around Cranes

Press release submitted on behalf of Globeius.

Cranes that transport molds can carry tens of thousands of pounds above the shop floor, making safety a critical consideration for manufacturers.

To provide an additional layer of protection, Globeius now offers optional sensor packages for cranes operating in manufacturing plants. Tailored to individual applications, the packages can help detect obstacles and hazards as cranes travel through the plant.

The sensor packages include proximity sensors in all directions that can prevent the crane from hitting any object and infrared sensors that can detect human beings approaching the crane and trigger the vehicle to stop. Sensor layouts can be configured to meet customers’ specific needs, with sensors installed in different locations to detect obstacles at varying levels and angles relative to the crane.  Industry standard light beams are also available to warn personnel of an approaching vehicle.

Sensors also can be switched on or off to accommodate particular applications.

“The sensors provide an additional layer of security and protection, especially in busy or congested manufacturing environments,” said Globeius General Manager Graeme Sands. “Some manufacturers have told us they worry about a moving crane hitting someone or damaging valuable equipment or tooling—these sensors can help provide reassurance against any accidents.”

The sensors can be installed on new cranes available from Globeius or retrofitted to existing cranes.

Globeius cranes are available with lifting capacities of up to 55,115 pounds. Designed for use by a single operator, the cranes are built to simplify mold changes and maneuver in confined spaces, with a turning radius of 9 inches. Models are available with horizontal, vertical, angled and rotating boom-arm movement capabilities.

For greater visibility and safety, the cranes also can be operated remotely.

With the optional sensor packages, manufacturers have another way to configure Globeius cranes to provide protection everywhere in the path of cranes.
